TOEFL Reading Practice PDF: Passage, Questions and Answers

This free PDF contains one academic reading passage about coral reefs, 10 multiple-choice questions and an answer key. It is a four-page self-study exercise from our earlier practice collection. It is not a complete simulation of the current TOEFL iBT Reading section.

What you can practise with this download

Use the passage to practise identifying a main idea, locating evidence, interpreting vocabulary in context and distinguishing supported statements from assumptions. You do not need prior knowledge of coral reefs: use the passage as the source of your answers.

How this PDF differs from the current test

The current ETS Reading overview lists Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage. This PDF provides academic-passage practice only. Its 20-minute study suggestion is a local exercise timer, not the timing of the whole official section. Read the ETS Reading overview before planning a timed mock test.

A three-step practice session

  1. First attempt: Read the passage and answer all ten questions without the key. Mark the sentence that supports each choice.
  2. Review: Check the key. Explain why your original answer was right or wrong; do not stop at remembering the correct letter.
  3. Transfer: Summarize the passage in two sentences, then practise a different text. Use the same evidence-finding method on unfamiliar material.

Try an original evidence question before downloading

Mini-passage: “After a storm damaged the reef, researchers returned every month to count young corals. Some sheltered areas recovered sooner than exposed areas, although recovery remained uneven.”

Which statement is supported? A: Every area recovered at the same speed. B: Researchers monitored the reef repeatedly. C: The storm improved coral growth everywhere.

Show the answer and explanation

B. “Returned every month” supports repeated monitoring. A contradicts uneven recovery. C introduces a claim the text does not make. This mini-question is original supplementary practice, not a quotation from the PDF.

Does the score predict my TOEFL result?

No. A result out of ten describes performance on this exercise. It cannot be converted reliably into an official TOEFL section score. Keep an error log organized by skill: missed detail, misunderstood word, unsupported inference or time pressure.
