IELTS Band 9: Criteria, Practice and Self-Review
Band 9 is a description of assessed performance, not a list of impressive words. Use the official criteria to evaluate complete responses, and treat unmarked model answers as examples rather than certified scores.
Read the criteria before collecting model answers
IELTS publishes its scoring guidance and performance descriptors. Use them to understand the qualities being assessed. Do not assume that a sample sentence, a memorized introduction or one advanced structure can establish a score for an entire response.
Develop an answer that fits the question
Underline every part of a practice prompt. Plan a clear position and support each main point with a relevant explanation. After writing, identify the sentence that answers each requirement. If a paragraph cannot be connected to the task, revise its purpose before polishing its vocabulary.
Example of development
A short claim such as Libraries are useful leaves the reader to supply the reasoning. A developed version might explain that a local library provides a quiet workspace for residents who share crowded homes. This is an illustrative improvement in specificity; it is not an officially scored Band 9 sample.
Review language in context
Check whether vocabulary expresses the intended meaning and works with nearby words. Look for recurring errors in articles, agreement and clause boundaries. Prefer an accurate sentence that develops the argument to a longer sentence whose structure you cannot control.
Use feedback and fresh tasks
Ask a qualified teacher to explain strengths and weaknesses against the relevant criteria. Revise the response, then attempt a new question without copying the model. A fresh task helps reveal whether the improvement is transferable.
Set a realistic next target
Choose an observable improvement such as developing each reason with an example or reducing a recurring agreement error. Track this across several tasks. Avoid guaranteed timelines or unsupported claims about the proportion of candidates who achieve a particular band.
