IELTS Score Requirements by Country: Study, Work & Visas
There is no single minimum IELTS score for an entire country. Your course, visa route or professional registration determines the requirement. Check the overall band, each skill, accepted IELTS variant and test validity before booking.
This guide helps you locate the applicable rule. It does not determine whether an individual application is eligible. Examples reviewed on 10 September 2026.

Canada: CLB is assessed by skill
IRCC publishes separate language tables for Express Entry programs. Check Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking against the applicable CLB level. Do not average the skills to decide whether every threshold is met. IELTS Academic is not the IELTS option specified for Express Entry.
UK: check the route and application history
The official Skilled Worker page distinguishes the general B2 requirement from B1 arrangements for qualifying extensions or updates by people who held the visa before 8 January 2026. An old blanket “IELTS 4.0 for UK work” statement can therefore mislead. Use the route page to check the evidence you can provide.
Professional registration is a separate check
For example, the IELTS listing for the UK General Medical Council specifies Academic IELTS, at least 7.5 overall and at least 7.0 in each skill. This is not a rule for every doctor, nurse, country or registration pathway. Confirm the regulator's current evidence policy, including validity and any rules about combining results.
Overall band versus minimum in each skill
Suppose a course asks for 7.0 overall with no component below 6.5. A learner with 8.0 Listening, 7.5 Reading, 6.0 Writing and 7.0 Speaking can reach a high overall average but still miss the Writing minimum. Improving an already strong skill will not resolve that requirement.
Does 7.0 overall always meet “7.0 overall, no band below 6.5”?
No. Check all four component scores. Both conditions must be satisfied.
Before booking an IELTS test
- Open the official page for your exact course, visa or registration route.
- Record the accepted test: Academic, General Training, IELTS for UKVI or another specified option.
- Copy the overall and four skill thresholds separately.
- Check validity, delivery method, One Skill Retake acceptance and submission deadline.
- If two pages disagree, ask the receiving organization to clarify before paying.
Can I study with IELTS 6.0 or 6.5?
It depends on the course and component scores. Foundation study, direct degree entry and professional qualifications can have different requirements at the same institution. Use the exact course page.
Does a university waiver also cover a visa?
Not automatically. Admission, immigration and professional registration are separate decisions. Check each requirement that applies.
