PTE Core Reading measures how effectively you understand practical English in connected texts. Strong performance depends on more than recognizing individual words: you need to follow logical relationships, identify a writer’s main point, understand vocabulary in context and connect sentences into a coherent paragraph. The test combines three useful forms of reading practice. Fill-in-the-blanks questions test vocabulary, collocation and grammar in context. Multiple-choice questions assess main ideas, supporting details, inference and the relationship between claims. Reorder-paragraph questions test cohesion by asking you to recognize introductions, reference words, chronological development and cause-and-effect links.
How to use this PTE Core Reading test
Start with untimed mode if you are learning the task types. Read each explanation carefully, including explanations for answers you got right. When you understand the patterns, retake the test in timed mode and make decisions without repeatedly rereading every sentence. Use the question navigator to return to unanswered items, but avoid spending too long on a single difficult question.
Strategies for each question type
Reading fill in the blanks
Read the complete sentence before selecting an answer. Check meaning, grammar and collocation. A word may be grammatically possible but still sound unnatural beside the surrounding words. Fixed phrases such as “in response to” are especially important.
Multiple-choice reading questions
Answer from the passage rather than from outside knowledge. For multiple-answer items, evaluate every option independently and select only statements that the text supports. Extreme words such as “always,” “only” and “guarantee” often signal an unsupported claim.
Reorder paragraphs
Find the sentence that introduces the topic without relying on earlier information. Then track pronouns, repeated nouns, time markers and logical connectors. A sentence beginning with “because of these results,” for example, must follow the sentence that states the results.
Understanding your estimated performance
Your percentage and performance description are designed to guide study. They are not produced by Pearson’s scoring system and should not be converted into an official PTE Core score. Use the result to identify weak question types, review incorrect answers and measure improvement when you retake the practice test.
