TOEFL Writing PDF: Legacy Templates and Study Examples
This is a legacy writing handbook. It contains source-summary and opinion-writing templates, examples and a study plan. Its original edition mixes older task descriptions, timing and scoring guidance. It should not be used as a specification of the current TOEFL exam, even where the original pages mention 2026.

Read this correction before using the PDF
The current Writing section includes Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion. Integrated Writing is an earlier iBT task. Do not treat the PDF's “Task 2: 30 minutes” or older 0–30 section-scale guidance as current Academic Discussion instructions. Confirm timing and scoring through ETS Writing information and the score-scale update.
Which parts remain useful for study?
- Compare a source's main claim with a different explanation.
- Organize a paragraph around one relevant point.
- Use a transition only when it expresses the intended relationship.
- Revise agreement, tense and sentence boundaries in your own writing.
The sample responses are teaching examples, not ETS-scored answers. A template does not guarantee a score, and advanced vocabulary cannot replace answering the task accurately.
Try a useful revision exercise
Draft: “Online classes are good. They are convenient. They are good for students.” Rewrite it so the reason explains a specific benefit.
Read an original revision and explanation
“Online classes can help students who live far from campus because they can attend without spending several hours travelling each day.”
The revision identifies who benefits and explains how. It replaces repeated praise with a concrete reason. Another answer could be equally effective if it develops a relevant point.
Use current questions for exam preparation

If your teacher assigns the older integrated format, use the legacy Integrated Writing explanation. Keep historical task practice separate from a timed rehearsal of the exam you will take.
