Test Preparation
Best Duolingo English Test Practice Resources and Tips

The quick answer
Start with the official Duolingo English Test practice test and current task guides. Then choose one resource for the skill that needs work: reading, listening, speaking or writing. British Council LearnEnglish, VOA Learning English and TypoGrammar can support daily practice. Reviewing your own mistakes is more useful than collecting more resources without using them.
This guide helps you choose Duolingo English Test practice resources by purpose and use them in a manageable routine. Official information and provider pages were checked on September 27, 2026. Our recommendations are editorial judgments based on relevance, access and usefulness for a particular task; they are not a hands-on ranking of every commercial product.
If you are still deciding whether to take the exam, begin with our DET cost, duration, requirements and acceptance guide. Confirm your receiving program's requirements before choosing a target score.
Best DET practice resources at a glance
| Resource | Best use | Access and limits |

| Official video walkthrough | Seeing how the test works | Available on the test-structure page; watching alone is not practice. |
| British Council LearnEnglish | Skill practice selected by level | Free-resource library; registration unlocks the full library. General English, not DET simulation. |
| VOA Learning English | Reading and listening about real topics | Public learning content; no certified DET scoring. |
| TypoGrammar DET practice | Original examples, writing outlines and review | Free independent resources; not official questions or scored answers. |
1. Use the official practice test as your starting point
Our first recommendation is the official practice test. Duolingo's practice-test help page says it is free after account creation, can be repeated, takes about 45 minutes and gives an estimated score range. It includes the same question types and an adaptive experience. Follow its current instructions rather than relying on an old third-party mock test.
Complete your first attempt without dictionaries, answer suggestions or help from someone else. Immediately afterward, write down what caused difficulty: understanding instructions, finding words, developing an idea or finishing on time. These observations determine what to practise next.
An estimate is not a certificate
2. Check official task guides before following tips
The DET Help Center is the place to check task descriptions and rules. The current test-structure guide includes Interactive Speaking, Interactive Listening and Interactive Writing alongside other question types. A preparation resource that omits current tasks may give you an incomplete picture.
Create a short task checklist. For each question type, note what you receive, what you must produce and the instructions you need to follow. If a teacher's video and the current official guide disagree, check the official guide first. Old resources may still be useful for English practice, but their format claims need verification.
3. Turn video walkthroughs into active practice
Watch the walkthrough embedded in the official test-structure page to understand the flow of the test. Pause after a task explanation and describe the instructions in your own words. Later, complete a similar practice activity without replaying the teacher's answer.
For additional teaching styles, browse our DET YouTube channel guide. Check a video's date and task coverage before adopting its advice. A useful lesson should leave you with something to do: a fresh response, a correction or a clearer understanding of an instruction.
Avoid spending a whole session watching model answers. Try the question first, compare your answer afterward, and explain one improvement you would make. That gives the video a specific job in your preparation.
4. Build general English with British Council LearnEnglish
British Council LearnEnglish's free resources cover listening, reading, writing, speaking, grammar and vocabulary, with filters including level and skill. The site states that registration unlocks its full resource library. This makes it a useful option when your difficulty is language ability rather than test instructions.
Choose material you can mostly understand but that still requires attention. Complete the activity, check the explanation and reuse two useful expressions in original sentences. If a text is so difficult that you translate every line, move to a more manageable level before increasing difficulty.
These are general English resources. They do not reproduce every DET task or certify a DET score. Use them to strengthen the language you bring to test-specific practice.
5. Use VOA Learning English for reading and listening
VOA Learning English provides learning material built around news and other topics. Select an item with audio and accompanying text when available. It can give you a reason to read or listen for meaning instead of treating every sentence as an isolated exercise.
Try this routine: listen once for the main point, explain it aloud, then read the text to check what you missed. Choose one short section for closer listening and record the words you misheard. Finish with a three-sentence summary in your own words.
Do not assume the speed, accent or topic of a learning clip predicts your exam. The purpose is to improve comprehension and recall; official materials remain your reference for test format.
6. Use TypoGrammar for focused DET practice
Our resources work best when you select one that addresses an observed weakness. They are independent teaching materials with original examples, not a collection of leaked or official exam questions.
- For developing spoken and written answers, use DET production questions and examples. Answer before reading the model.
- For organizing writing, try adaptable DET writing templates. Treat an outline as a way to order ideas, not a paragraph to memorize.
- For photo tasks, use photo-description tips. Practise an overview followed by details you can actually see.
- For comprehension work, open our DET reading practice and review the reason for each answer.
- For a daily sequence, follow the 14-day DET study plan. Adjust the schedule to your starting level and deadline.
Should you pay for a preparation app, course or tutor?
Start free, then pay only for a specific need you can describe. A larger question bank will not necessarily solve a problem with unclear ideas or recurring grammar errors. Personal feedback may be more relevant in that case, provided it explains what to improve and lets you apply the correction.
- Ask for a sample lesson and an example of feedback before purchasing.
- Check whether the material covers the current task types and instructions.
- Find out whether feedback comes from a teacher, software or both, and what it actually evaluates.
- Compare total cost, access period, cancellation terms and the number of reviewed responses.
- Be cautious about guaranteed scores, secret question lists and claims that a template works for every prompt.

Practical tips for each skill
Reading: identify evidence before choosing an answer
Summarize the main point of a paragraph before focusing on individual words. For a comprehension question, locate the sentence or inference that supports your answer. When reviewing a mistake, explain why your choice was tempting and why the text does not support it.
Listening: separate meaning errors from spelling errors
A wrong transcription can come from not hearing a word, misunderstanding its meaning or spelling it incorrectly. Label the error before choosing a remedy. Replay short sections during study and check against a transcript, then test yourself on unfamiliar audio.
Speaking: answer directly and support one clear idea
Record a response to an unfamiliar question. Listen for whether the first sentence answers it, whether the example is relevant and whether your sentences finish clearly. Improve one weakness and try a different question. Speaking quickly is not a substitute for being understandable.
Writing: develop your answer before adding complexity
Use a clear main point, a reason and a specific example when the prompt calls for an opinion. Check relevance before replacing ordinary vocabulary with unfamiliar words. Revise sentence boundaries, verb forms and unclear references. For follow-up questions, address the new request instead of repeating your first answer.
Try an original practice task now
Independent study exercise
Prompt: Your community library can either extend its opening hours or buy more computers. Which option would help students more, and why? Spend one minute planning, then write a short response in four minutes.
See an example and review questions
I would extend the library's opening hours because many students need a quiet place to study after work. A student who finishes a shift at six may have little time to use a library that closes at seven. Staying open until nine would give that student a more useful study session. More computers could help too, but longer opening hours would make all the existing facilities available for more time.
- Does your opening state a choice?
- Does your example show why that choice helps students?
- Have you explained a consequence instead of repeating the same point?
- Can you correct one unclear sentence without changing your meaning?
The model makes a choice, explains a reason, gives a concrete example and acknowledges the alternative. It has not been assigned an official DET score. A different choice can work equally well if it is clearly supported.
Now answer a fresh follow-up aloud: How could the library decide whether the change was successful? This time, focus on evidence such as evening attendance or student feedback. Do not simply repeat why you chose longer hours or more computers.
A simple routine that makes resources useful
For a 45-minute study session, spend 5 minutes reviewing previous corrections, 15 minutes on your weakest skill, 15 minutes producing a fresh answer, and 10 minutes checking it. This is our suggested routine; longer official practice sessions need their own time slot.
Keep an error log with four fields: the task, the problem, the correction and the next action. For example: “Speaking; I gave an opinion without a reason; add a specific example; try a new question tomorrow.” Look for a recurring pattern before switching resources.
Duolingo's official readiness guide recommends understanding the test and practising English regularly. Build review into that practice. Repeating a mock test without addressing the difficulties it revealed can leave the same weaknesses untouched.
Avoid these common preparation mistakes
- Collecting many apps and courses but completing very little focused practice.
- Using an old task format without checking current official instructions.
- Memorizing complete answers rather than responding to the actual prompt.
- Treating a practice estimate or an AI-generated score as a certified result.
- Ignoring technical setup, identification or the test environment until the last day.
Use recording tools, dictionaries and feedback during study where they help, but distinguish study from the certified test. The official DET rules require you to close unrelated programs and disable assistance tools, prohibit notes and memorized answers from other sources, and require a compliant testing space. Do not use AI, another person or outside reference material to answer the live exam.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free Duolingo English Test practice resource?
Our recommended starting point is the official DET practice test because it provides adaptive practice and an estimated score range. Add official task guides and focused language practice for the weaknesses you identify.
Is the official DET practice test free?
Yes. Duolingo says you can take its practice test at no cost as often as you like after creating an account. Check the official site for current access instructions.
How long does the DET practice test take?
The official help page checked on September 27, 2026 says about 45 minutes. This is separate from the certified test, which requires about one hour.
Does a practice score guarantee my real DET score?
No. A practice estimate helps you assess readiness, but it is not a certified result or a guarantee. Review your task performance as well as the estimated range.
Do I need a paid DET preparation course?
Not necessarily. Start with free official resources. Consider paid help when you can identify a specific need, such as individual feedback, and confirm that the service addresses it.
Can I use AI to prepare for the Duolingo English Test?
You can use it before the test to suggest original practice prompts or discuss errors, while checking its feedback critically. Do not treat an AI score as official or use outside assistance during the certified test.
Are TypoGrammar practice materials official Duolingo questions?
No. TypoGrammar offers independent explanations, original practice and study routines. Use official Duolingo sources to verify current task instructions, rules and test requirements.
Sources and how we selected these resources
We prioritized official DET information for test facts, then selected supplementary resources for a clear learning purpose. We considered current-format relevance, practical access, opportunities to respond and review, and whether the resource's limits are clear. General-English materials are identified separately from DET-specific practice. TypoGrammar resources are our own, and the study routines and model response are original editorial content.

Apply what you learned
You keep taking practice tests, but your spoken answers still lack examples. What should you change first?
Show answer and explanation
Add focused speaking practice: record a fresh answer with a specific example, review it and try another question.
Choose a resource and activity that address the weakness the practice test revealed. Repeating a benchmark without reviewing your responses does not directly address that weakness.
