PTE Results: How Long, Passing Scores and Retake Rules

PTE Academic results usually arrive within two business days, but some take up to five. There is no single passing score: the organization receiving your result sets the requirement. If you need another attempt, wait for your scores before booking and follow Pearson’s retake policy.

This independent guide primarily covers PTE Academic. PTE Home uses a different result format, explained below. Official sources checked on September 27, 2026; confirm current policies when booking or applying.

How long does it take to get PTE results?

Most PTE Academic candidates receive results within two business days; some results take up to five business days. These are the windows in Pearson’s current Academic FAQ. A result arriving sooner for a friend does not establish a deadline for yours.

Use business days when planning. A weekend appointment followed by a Monday application deadline leaves little margin. Build your schedule around the possibility of a slower result and the time the receiving organization needs to process it.

Pearson notifies you by email when scores are ready, and you access them through myPTE. Its Academic scoring page explains account access and free digital score sharing. Keep the email address on your account accessible after test day.

If you are still waiting beyond the published window, check myPTE and any messages from Pearson, then use the official help center. Have your booking details available. Repeatedly refreshing the account or comparing forum timelines will not tell you why an individual result is delayed.

Receiving a score is different from submitting it

Plan three separate milestones: completing the exam, receiving the score and meeting the recipient’s submission requirements. A university deadline may concern receipt of verified results rather than the day you finish the test.

Follow the delivery instructions in Pearson’s scoring help page and the receiving organization’s instructions. Keep a record of which program should receive the result and check that you have selected the correct institution or followed the required verification process.

If a deadline is close, contact the admissions or application team with a precise question: “Must my verified English result reach you by this date, or can it follow after the application?” Only that organization can confirm whether it permits later evidence.

What is a passing score on the PTE exam?

PTE Academic does not have a universal pass mark. It reports an overall score and individual language-skill scores on a 10–90 scale. The required result depends on the receiving institution or application route. See Pearson’s official scoring overview.

Do not treat “65 is a pass” or “79 guarantees acceptance” as a general rule. Those numbers may be relevant to a particular requirement, but neither replaces the published conditions for your program. A high overall score may still leave an individual skill below its required minimum.

Make your own requirements table before preparing. Include the exact test accepted, overall minimum, each skill minimum, result-age rule and submission deadline. If two pages give different requirements, ask the recipient which applies to your course, intake or application.

PTE Home is different: its result is pass or fail rather than an Academic-style numerical score. See Pearson’s PTE Home scoring page. Do not transfer Academic score targets to that test.

How often can you retake the PTE exam?

You may take PTE more than once in a month, up to 12 times within a 12-month window. You must receive your latest scores before booking again and can hold only one booking at a time. Pearson’s retake policy provides an exception-request process for candidates who need more attempts.

Treat the limit as a moving 12-month window, not a counter that automatically resets on January 1. Use your existing account; Pearson explicitly prohibits creating another account to bypass the rules. Appointment availability also affects how soon you can sit again.

Eligibility to rebook and readiness to improve are separate decisions. If you missed a target, identify the gap before spending on another attempt. A short interval can be useful when you have corrected a specific problem; a larger language-skill gap may need longer preparation.

A practical plan before your next attempt

1. Compare the result with the actual requirement. Identify whether the overall score, one skill or several skills need improvement.
2. Review your performance information. Turn feedback into a short list of behaviours you can practise, rather than simply choosing a higher target number.
3. Practise and review. For writing, inspect sentence boundaries and development. For speaking, record responses and check clarity and task completion.
4. Check progress under time limits. Use relevant practice tasks to decide whether your weak area has improved consistently.
5. Recheck your timeline and budget. Include the next available appointment, result processing and the recipient’s deadline.

Keep a simple error log with four columns: task, recurring problem, correction and next practice date. “Improve writing” is hard to act on. “Check every sentence for a main verb and remove fragments before submitting” gives you a repeatable review step.

If you believe a result needs formal review, read Pearson’s rescore and technical-review guidance before deciding what to do. Do not assume a review will raise a score or solve an approaching deadline.
