IELTS Task 2 Grammar: Accurate Sentences and Revision
Use grammar to express a clear argument accurately. Sentence variety helps when it serves your meaning; inserting complicated structures does not by itself produce a high IELTS score.
Build the argument before extending the sentence
Start with a clear position and a relevant reason. For example: Reliable buses can reduce the need to drive. Develop the reason with a concrete situation, such as a worker reaching an early shift. The grammar should make the relationship between these ideas clear.
Practise a concessive clause
Basic version: The service is expensive. It is useful. Revised version: Although the service is expensive, it helps residents reach essential appointments. The revision expresses a concession. Do not add but after the although clause; check that the main clause remains complete.
Practise a conditional claim
Compare: More buses solve every traffic problem, with: If services are frequent and reliable, more commuters may choose the bus. The conditional version qualifies the claim instead of presenting a universal result. Choose the tense and modal according to the meaning you can support.
Use relative clauses to identify or explain
In Residents who work late need reliable evening services, the relative clause identifies a group. Do not automatically place commas around an identifying clause. Read the sentence without the clause and ask whether the reference has changed.
Check accuracy systematically
Underline each subject and finite verb to check agreement. Mark independent clauses to detect comma splices. Check article choices and countable nouns. Keep an error log with a corrected sentence and a new example, rather than a list of rule names you cannot apply.
A revision exercise
Revise: Public transport are useful, it help people which cannot drive. One possible answer is: Public transport is useful because it helps people who cannot drive. The changes repair agreement, connect the clauses and use who for people. Other accurate revisions are possible.
Assess the complete response
Use the published IELTS criteria and feedback on the whole essay. A single sentence cannot establish Band 8 or any other band. Admission and immigration requirements belong to the specific receiving authority; there is no universal UK or Canada writing threshold supplied by this grammar lesson.
