Duolingo Fill in the Blanks: guide and examples

For word-completion practice, read the sentence, identify the missing word’s grammatical role, and check the visible letters before answering. The examples here teach sentence-level vocabulary and spelling. They are not a full simulation of the official passage-based C-Test.

“Fill in the blanks” can refer to more than one reading skill. Duolingo describes C-Test, where missing letters must be restored within a passage, and Vocabulary in Context, where sentence meaning helps you choose a fitting word. Our short, original sentences isolate these skills for practice; they are not full C-Test passages or copies of official items.

Current official terminology: C-Test and Vocabulary in Context. See Duolingo’s guidance and the official practice test for current task instructions.

A practical method

  1. Read the entire sentence or passage before entering a word.
  2. Use the first letters, grammar, and the meaning of nearby words together.
  3. Reread the completed sentence to check that it sounds natural and conveys the intended idea.

Original practice examples

Try each prompt before reading the answer and explanation.

1. The museum off___ free admission on Fridays.

Answer: offers

Why: The singular subject “museum” takes “offers.” The phrase “offers free admission” also fits the meaning.

2. Because the results were inconclusive, the researchers repeated the expe_______.

Answer: experiment

Why: An experiment is the procedure researchers repeat to test an idea. The first letters and surrounding context support the answer.

3. The new bus route made the library more _______ to residents without cars. (accessible / accidental)

Answer: accessible

Why: Accessible means easy to reach or use. “Accidental” does not fit the sentence’s meaning.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Completing a word from its first letters without reading the sentence.
  • Ignoring subject–verb agreement or word form.
  • Choosing a possible word that does not fit the meaning of the whole passage.

Continue practising

Use three checks on every completion

In ‘The team had finished the report before lunch’, the phrase ‘had finished’ shows a completed action before another past point. A completion must fit that grammar as well as the sentence meaning and supplied letters. If several words seem possible, use all three checks before choosing; do not solve the item from its first letters alone.
