Duolingo English Test reading practice
Practise DET reading through three skills: recognizing English words, completing words in context, and understanding passages. This collection contains 30 word-recognition items, 24 sentence-based word completions, and 18 comprehension questions across three passages. Each activity includes explanations and an option to retry missed answers.
How to start
- Read the full sentence before deciding on a missing word.
- For word selection, reject plausible-looking invented words instead of guessing from spelling alone.
- For longer passages, identify the main idea before checking details and inferences.

Match the exercise to your reading difficulty
Choose Read and Select if unfamiliar spellings cause hesitation. Choose Fill in the Blanks if you recognize a word but cannot produce its correct form. Choose Interactive Reading if you need practice separating a main idea from a supporting detail. The guide for each activity explains an approach before you try the question sets.
Example: evidence beats a plausible guess
Consider: ‘The museum extended its Friday opening hours after visitors requested evening access.’ The supported reason for the change is visitor demand. A claim that ticket sales had fallen adds information the sentence never gives. In your own reading, underline the words that support an answer before accepting it.

- Start with the skill that causes the most difficulty: word recognition, word completion, or passage comprehension. Review its guide, complete one set, and study the explanations before moving on.
- Can I repeat only the questions I missed?
- Yes. After submitting a focused reading set, use Retry missed questions. You can also restart the full set or move to another set.
